Actually, the better brands (Hot Springs, Caldera, Sundance, Jacuzzi, etc.) will list the true HP. You even have to exercise a degree of caution when comparing to motors in a catalog, such as Grainger. All of the motor manufacturers sell motors that are under-rated, over-rated and true-rated. The last time I looked, Grainger sold all of them. There are only two ways to tell the true HP of a motor. The first is by multiplying the HP times the service factor listed on the motor plate (sometimes this info is deliberately left off). The second is by multiplying the amps times the voltage (this is why 240 volt motors use half the amperage of 120 volt motors).

: Well, as far as I can tell, 99.9% of the spas
: sold are like that. If your pump has a
: stamped HP number on the motor, it may be
: real. If the HP on the motor nameplate is
: blank, and the pump has a "3
: horsepower" sticker on it somewhere,
: what you have - technically - is a misprint.
: Instead of "horsepower" it should
: read "horse puckey.": Compare the voltage and amps of your pump motor
: to single phase motors with identical votage
: and amp ratings on www.grainger.com - you'll
: see how bad we're all being snookered.: Same voltage, same amperage, it's gonna be
: roughly the same horsepower. Plus or minus
: max 10%.
