throat irratation

In the past couple of weeks when using the spa there is a chemical mist or something in the air causing me to cough and irratate my throat. It reallly hasn't bothered my skin...maybe my eyes now that I think about it. I hate to admit it, but I haven't tested my water in probably two months. Again, the coughing only started about two weeks ago. I will test my water this evening...my spa retailer said my ph may be low. All of the chemicals seem so confusing, if the ph is very low and I need to raise it drastically then I 'll either have to use spa up or soda ash...I don't have soda ash, I do have spa up.
How much neglect is needed to damage your equipment? I'm fearful I may have damaged my beautiful $9,000 spa!!
